Veterans Preference

Our attorneys are highly experienced in Minnesota’s veterans preference law and its requirements. Joseph Kelly and Kevin Beck have frequently represented veterans facing discharge under Minn. Stat. § 197.46, taking one such success to the Minnesota Court of Appeals, which ultimately ushered in changes to the Veterans’ Preference Act itself. In addition to removal, our attorneys have represented veterans in hiring and promotional decisions under § 197.455 and have filed writs of mandamus and petitions for enforcement pursuant to § 197.481. Kelly & Lemmons has been recognized as a Patriotic Employer by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (“ESGR”).

It is very common for veterans to continue to serve the pubic by transitioning into public employment. Through the Unions we represent, we represent court personnel, sheriff’s deputies, police officers, and other public employees on various matters under the veterans preference act, and have particular experience representing law enforcement throughout the State of Minnesota.
